Omar Hassan is the proprietor of a café in Cairo's Old Quarter that quickly becomes H-Cell's primary informal base of operations in the city. He is introduced by Lieutenant Pendleton as a useful man who knows everyone and can make things happen, and he immediately demonstrates this by greeting the cell with theatrical warmth, calling Hanover beautiful, shaking Hertz's hands vigorously with both hands, and dispatching a serving boy with coffee before anyone has sat down properly.
Behind the theatrical hospitality, Omar is a serious and well-connected operator. He supplies the cell with intelligence about the dig site location, puts them in touch with his cousin Ahmed for desert transport, introduces them to his cousin's antiquities contact for the grave water, and when Hertz asks about aqua mortis — using the term directly — Omar's expression turns grave and he confirms it can be arranged, for a price. He navigates questions about dynamite, occult practitioners, and occult materials with the equanimity of a man for whom unusual requests are simply business. He is one of H-Cell's most reliable assets in Cairo, and his network of family and contacts underpins much of their operational logistics.
