Lieutenant Graham Pendleton is H-Cell's British military liaison in Cairo — a bright young colonial officer introduced by Harry Lane and Finch as useful without knowing the real reason the Americans are in Egypt. He is professionally competent, speaks passable military German, and is initially the picture of a well-turned-out intelligence officer: pressed uniform, efficient manner, reliable discretion.
Over the course of the campaign his condition deteriorates markedly. By the time the cell returns from their first desert expedition, Pendleton has acquired stubble, red eyes, worn clothes, and the general appearance of someone who has not slept properly in days. The cause is his own intellectual curiosity: having translated Brandt's journal, he began independently researching Cairo Museum antiquities materials that he believed connected to what he had read, drawing himself deeper into territory the cell had specifically warned him to treat with caution. Hertz and others discuss, with genuine seriousness, whether Pendleton has learned too much to remain safe — and whether Delta Green protocols require they handle the situation themselves. He is also crucial as a conduit to the Hedgehog SOE team, arranging the desert rendezvous and equipping the joint force with transport, rations, and maps.
